Patrick Cooper on Investing in Birmingham's Neighborhoods

If a strong business community is the lifeblood of Birmingham, then clean, safe, attractive, vital neighborhoods are the city's backbone. Creating a good business climate and leveraging the public and private resources necessary to revitalize and improve neighborhoods are two sides of the same coin. It's all about taking a strategic, comprehensive approach to growth and development that works from the grassroots up, and from the corporate level down. It's about creating an atmosphere of opportunity for the hopes and aspirations we all have for ourselves, our families and our community.

As Mayor, I'll work directly with neighborhood leaders to develop strategies and tactics for addressing both the challenges and opportunities they face each day. We'll put programs in place to support and encourage neighborhood-based residential, business and recreational development. We'll clear abandoned lots and get rid of dilapidated houses. We'll start a land-banking initiative to strategically acquire and assemble large tracts of property for development or redevelopment. We'll encourage citizens to take pride in their neighborhoods by making sure that basic city services- from trash collection to street and sidewalk repairs to police and fire protection - are delivered effectively and efficiently to every neighborhood in Birmingham.

We can and will develop Birmingham's neighborhoods to their fullest potential.
